Entries are judged by top industry designers for their merits in appropriateness for the market, level of conceptual thinking, and quality of execution. 

We are pleased to introduce an impressive cast of experts who are renown creatives in the art of book design, who will graciously lend their time and expertise to the Top Shelf program this year.

 

INTRODUCING THE 2017 TOP SHELF JUDGES:

 

DON CLARK, owner of https://www.invisiblecreature.com/

Founded in 2006 by Don & Ryan Clark, Invisible Creature (IC) is a multi-disciplinary design and illustration studio based out of Seattle, Washington. IC has had the honor of receiving 4 Grammy nominations for music packaging, and has worked with clients such as Target, LEGO, Nike, Adobe, XBox, New York Times, Wired, Interscope, Nickelodeon and MTV- to name a few. Their client list also reads like a veritable who's-who of the music world, including Foo Fighters, Kendrick Lamar, Atmosphere, Chris Cornell, Wolfmother, Nirvana, Alice In Chains and countless others.  Invisible Creature also designs and curates their own line of products for both children and adults alike. Their toys and books can be found at Barnes & Noble, Anthropologie, Barneys New York, SF MOMA, Nordstrom, independent toy stores and art museums worldwide. Their work has been featured in the pages of Print, HOW, Communication Arts, IdN, Step, in addition to publications of the hard-bound variety by publishers such as Chronicle, Juxtapoz, Die Gestalten Verlag and Fantagraphics.

Will Staehle grew up reading comics and working summers at his parent’s design firm in Wisconsin. He was Art Director for HarperCollins Publishers in NY, the VP of Design at JibJab in LA, and has been labeled by Print Magazine as one of the Top Twenty Under Thirty New Visual Artists, an Art Director’s Club Young Gun, and has also exhibited a solo show of work at the Type Director’s Club. He’s designed covers for Michael Chabon, Michael Crichton, and a handful of authors not named Michael. Will is also the creator and illustrator of the award-winning middle grade series, Warren the 13th. 


 

MARIA LINDENFELDAR, creative director at http://press.princeton.edu/
Maria was named Creative Director at Princeton University Press in 2016 after working as a book designer/art director for 15 years. Maria and her team have been featured in 50 Books/50 Covers, AIGA Philadelphia, the Communication Arts Typography Annual, the AAUP Book Jacket and Journal Show, and the New York Book Show. In 2017, their microsite for Welcome to the Universe (produced in conjunction with design studio, Eastern Standard) won a Philadelphia American ADDY Award and a People's Choice Webby award. Maria also recently contributed to Publishing Research Quarterly –– A journal presenting significant research and analyses on the full range of the publishing industry. Maria has a masters degree in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and an undergraduate degree in comparative government from Georgetown University. Maria’s life is rounded out with her husband, two kids, two dogs, painting, writing, skiing, playing tennis and enjoying her home in Pennington, NJ.
