Overview and Criteria

The ECPA Bestseller lists are compiled monthly and are based on actual sales through various retail outlets nationwide. Bestseller lists serve as a helpful tool for many different industry stakeholders:
  • Editorial, marketing, publicity and other publishing departments and professionals
  • Booksellers
  • Authors
  • Agents
  • Readers and book buyers
ECPA's lists represent a broad swath of categories and titles and are cleaned to represent the best selection of titles published by companies with active Evangelical publishing programs. Each list is created using four consecutive, one-week sales periods and then labeled as the following month's bestseller list. ECPA endeavors to compile the lists as closely to the first of each month as possible to account for any late releases which might qualify for a place on one of the lists.

In order for a list to qualify it must first have sufficient sales to rank in the top number of unique titles for its respective category. Occasionally titles may not be included on a list because they have been incorrectly categorized, either by the book's publishing house or by a third-party database. ECPA is not responsible for missing or inaccurate data and it's effect on a title's place on one of our bestseller lists.

A qualifying title must have sales in at least 20% of reporting stores during at least one week of the four-week reporting cycle. This is to offset any titles that have exceptional sales due to micro-regional sales activity (church events, special orders, etc.) Additionally, titles that are not offered to our reporting store partners at a trade discount are not eligible for listing. Holiday-specific titles (i.e., titles containing Christmas that are holiday-related) may be excluded from the lists. Because the lists are published based on historical data, many times the holiday in question may have already passed, meaning the list is no longer as helpful for booksellers and book buyers. On all non-bible lists, only books with a retail value over $5 USD are included, all other titles are listed on our monthly Top 25 under $5 list. This is because lower price point titles have a greater chance of selling in bulk quantities and can skew the results when mixed with typical trade paper and hardcover price points.

Currently all of the ECPA lists, with the exception of the Multi-Channel Top 25, are based on sales of books through approximately 400 Christian retail stores nationwide. The multi-channel list includes sales of titles through Christian retailers, General Trade retail stores and online Christian book sales.
