WENDY GRISHAM VP and Publisher, Jericho Books
Finding the 'Nones' Wendy Grisham is trying to reach this audience - the ‘nones’
as they are affectionately called by the media. This is no easy task because they are not gathering around a
particular watering hole. We know
more about where they are not than where they might be found. Statistics lately are sobering about the number of young
people leave the church, the people who describe themselves as non-religious,
and reports of how irrelevant Christianity has become. During this hour, Wendy will identify these groups and share
her involvement in trying to reach out to them through
various media. She will also draw
from her experience as a publisher in a post-Christian country.
Wendy
Grisham is Vice President and Publisher of Jericho Books. Before starting Jericho Books, she was
the director of publishing at Hodder Faith, an imprint of Hodder &
Stoughton, a division of Hachette UK where she published the NIV Bible, Brian
McLaren, Philip Yancey and Tim Keller. Her previous work includes Publishing
Director at Alpha International for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and
Rights Manager at Random House, UK. Wendy is a graduate of the University of
Mississippi and the University of Warwick (in Warwickshire, UK). Her favorite color is orange and she is
known to have terrible giggle fits.
PETER HILDICK-SMITH President, Codex-Group LLC Caught in the Middle: Trade Publishing’s Halfway Digital Transition Since the launch of the first
nationally branded eReader in November 2006, the media, publishing pundits and
the conventional wisdom have all agreed that book publishing is destined to
ultimately become a digitally dominant business. Digital investment, eBook
revenue, market share and profits have all exploded, fueled by billion dollar
plus ad spending, driving sales of digital reading devices into 70% of regular
book buyer households in little more than 36 months. Physical book stores and
book selling space has continued to seriously contract as a result, accelerated
by the collapse of the nation’s #2 book chain. Can an all-digital book market
be far away? Book audience research firm
Codex-Group has been tracking book buyers and their digital behavior since the
eReader market began. With data from over 200,000 frequent book buyer
interviews over that time – capturing national book reading, buying,
downloading, retail shopping, brand loyalty, digital device adoption, digital
consumption, device usage, overall media consumption, and other leading
indicators – the expected transition to a digital dominant book world is may
now be seriously in question. Codex will be sharing major new findings on the
underlying trends behind digital book adoption, and the implications they have
for book publishing’s future.
Peter Hildick-Smith is President of
Codex-Group LLC. Founded in 2004, the firm pioneered book audience research.
Codex tracks and forecasts digital book trends for book publishers, retailers
and technology companies, using quantitative online research as a foundation
for business strategy development. The company’s proprietary, digital Book Preview and Author Equity pre-publication market test programs help publishers
and authors boost new book discovery, purchase conversion rates, expand
audiences and increase sales—supporting the successful publication of numerous New York Times bestsellers. Prior to founding Codex, Hildick-Smith
worked at GE Capital Global Consumer Finance, as Chief Marketing Officer, UK,
and SVP, Customer Management, North America, supporting clients including
Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Exxon/Mobil, Gap, and JC Penney. At Bertelsmann’s Bantam
Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, he was VP, Merchandising, and VP, Marketing
for the Young Readers, School, College and Library businesses. He lectures
regularly at The Wharton School, is on the faculty of the NYU Center for
Publishing, sits on the Wharton Digital Press Board of Advisors, and is a
research advisor to the National Endowment for the Arts. He has an MBA in
Marketing from The Wharton School (1981), and a BA in Comparative Literature
from the University of Pennsylvania (1976).
JOEL MANBY President and Chief Executive Officer Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation Author of "Love Works" Love Works: Seven Timeless Principles for Effective Leaders Before Joel Manby won the respect of America with his appearance on the
CBS reality TV series Undercover Boss, he was a highly successful
corporate executive. After the show aired, many of the 18 million
viewers wrote to him about the profound impact of his servant
leadership. In Love Works, Joel Manby introduces us to the power of
agape love in the workplace. After years of leading
thousands of men and women, Manby has proven that leading with love is
effective, even in a business environment. Manby challenges leaders to
allow integrity and faith to guide leadership decisions, outlining seven
time-proven principles that break down the natural walls within
corporate cultures, empowering managers and employees, disarming
difficulties, and cultivating an atmosphere that builds long-term
success. Manby also leverages the undeniable truth that love builds
healthy relationships at home---why not use the same behavior to build
healthy relationships at work? Joel Manby is President and
Chief Executive Officer of Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation (HFE).
HFE is the largest family owned theme park corporation in the U.S. The company
creates, develops and operates entertainment, tourism and hospitality
properties spanning 26 locations in ten states. Manby’s association with
HFE dates back to 1998 when he was invited to serve on the HFE Board of
Directors. He later became non-executive chairman of the Board and then
accepted the role of CEO in 2003. During his tenure two of HFE’s parks have
earned the industry’s highest honor, the Applause Award. Manby has incorporated the
definition of love the verb into the company’s existing organic culture to
establish how leaders are to behave. He views love as a mode of thinking–one
that has helped him deliver tangible results and position HFE as the 9th
largest themed attractions company in the world (including Dollywood, Silver
Dollar City and Stone Mountain Park.) An expert on leadership and
customer relations, he spent 20 years in the auto industry. Manby was a member
of the start-up team for Saturn Corporation where he was instrumental in
launching Saturn’s innovative marketing and distribution strategy. After seven
years with Saturn and a two- year term with GM’s International Division, he was
promoted to CEO of Saab Automobile USA. During his four-year tenure at Saab, he
led the company to dramatic results as sales increased by 67 percent and their
J.D. Power Quality Rating improved from 30th to fifth in the industry. Manby serves on several
boards, including the National Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and John
Stott Ministries. He also chairs reThink, a non-profit company whose mission is
to provide effective tools which enable families to learn biblical virtues in
the home, school and church. As valedictorian of Albion
College, Manby was a Rhodes scholarship finalist. He earned an MBA from Harvard
Business School on a GM scholarship. His involvement with his alma mater has
continued throughout his career. Manby was elected to the Albion College
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 and has served on the Albion College Board of
Trustees. Celebrating his accomplishments and his dedication to the college,
Albion presented Manby with the Distinguished Alumni Award. In March 2010, he was
featured on the hit CBS show Undercover Boss. Manby and the employees of HFE
moved millions of viewers across the world with their unique approach to
leadership. He now shares the principles that make HFE successful in his new
book, Love Works.

STEPHEN MANSFIELD Bestselling author Founder, The Mansfield Group
ECPA Awards Banquet Speaker (sponsored by Thomas Nelson)
Stephen
Mansfield is a New York Times
bestselling author and a popular speaker who is becoming one of this generation’s
most respected voices on religion and modern culture. He is also an advisor to
leaders around the world, an activist in a variety of social causes and a
regular commentator on the FOX and CNN news networks. His first book on
Winston Churchill was a Gold Medallion Award Finalist. He also wrote
widely-acclaimed biographies of Booker T. Washington and George Whitefield as
well as a number of other books on history and leadership. In 1997, the
Governor of Tennessee commissioned Mansfield to write the official history of
religion in Tennessee for that state’s bicentennial. In 2002, Stephen left the
pastorate after twenty fruitful years to write and lecture full-time. Not
long afterward, he wrote The Faith of George
W. Bush, which spent many weeks on the New
York Times bestseller list and won numerous national awards. The book also
became a source for Oliver Stone’s acclaimed film, W, which chronicled Bush’s rise to the presidency. This
international bestseller led to a string of influential books over the
following years. Stephen wrote The Faith
of the American Soldier after being embedded with U.S. troops in Iraq. He
also wrote about the new Pope in Benedict
XVI: His Life and Mission. His book The
Faith of Barack Obama was another international bestseller and was often a
topic in major media during the presidential campaign of 2008. To answer the
crumbling values of portions of American corporate culture, he wrote The Search for God and Guinness and soon
found himself speaking to corporate gatherings around the world. Stephen
continues to write books about faith and culture—recently on figures as varied
as Oprah Winfrey and Abraham Lincoln—but beyond his writing career he has
founded The Mansfield Group, a successful consulting and communications firm,
as well as Chartwell
Literary Group, a firm that creates and manages literary projects.
Together with his wife, Beverly, Mansfield has also created The Global Leadership Development Fund, a
foundation that sponsors leadership training and networking around the world. In
recent years, Stephen’s popularity as a speaker has nearly eclipsed his
reputation as a bestselling author. He is often to be found addressing a
university gathering, a corporate retreat or a fundraising banquet and stirring
his audiences with the humor and cultural analysis that have become his
trademark. [More information on the ECPA Awards Banquet]
