Mr. Robert E. Baensch is the Director for Certificate Programs in Publishing and he joined the faculty of New York University in the fall of 1996. Mr. Baensch also serves as a consultant specializing in international, professional, trade and digital publishing. He has in-depth experience for all aspects of book, magazine, journal and multimedia publishing including editorial development, production, marketing, distribution and financial controls.

Mr. Robert E. Baensch was Senior Vice President for marketing books and journals for Rizzoli International Publications, Inc. and prior to that he was the Director of Publishing at the American Institute of Physics from 1988 to 1991 responsible for over sixty journals, a book program, and database information services. From 1983 to 1988, Mr. Baensch was Vice President - Marketing of the Macmillan Publishing Company where, in addition to a full range of marketing/sales responsibilities, he directed the Macmillan Software Company and initiated the Family Album, USA, an English as Second Language Multimedia Program. Prior to 1983, he was President of Springer Verlag New York Inc., after graduating from the Senior Executive Program of the Stanford University's Graduate School of Business in the summer of 1980. Mr. Baensch was Vice President and Director of the International Division of Harper & Row Publishers Inc. from 1968 to 1980 where he established four subsidiaries and three indigenous publishing programs. He started his publishing career with the McGraw-Hill Book Company where he was manager of the Translations Rights Department and then Editorial Director of the International Division.

Mr. Baensch has served on the Board of Directors of the Association of American Publishers and chaired their International Division and the Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Scholarly Publishers. As a result of his interests and experiences in the global publishing arena, he was selected as one of two delegates to represent American publishers on the Executive Council of the International Publishers Association and was appointed the first Chairperson for their new Education Committee. He has served on the Executive Group Council of the STM - International Group of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers from 1987 to 1990. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Consumer Union, Book Industry Study Group Inc., Island Press Inc., Kane/Miller Book Publishers Inc., and Transaction Publishers. In January 2000, Mr. Baensch was appointed to be the Editor for the Publishing Research Quarterly journal and he is the Editor for The Book Publishing Industry, a reference work released last year.

He is a faculty member of the New York University's Center for Publishing and the Stanford University Professional Publishing Course. His writings on publishing topics are available in a wide number of professional books and journals.
