Session1
The changing paper market
Capacity is being reduced, prices are going up, pulp is getting harder to get and more expensive. Paper companies are closing or merging. The American dollar is weaker and competing with foreign companies for raw materials. What does this mean to the US publishing industry? Also, the environmental initiatives for including more post consumer waste in paper are gaining ground in all areas of publishing, from paper mills to major retailers to end users. How should we respond?

Topics include:
  • The economics of paper producing and buying
  • Defining the terms – PCW, FSC, SFI, COC, etc.
  • The new Book Industry Environmental Council (BISG and GPI initiative)
  • Supply and demand – the economics of recycled paper

Presented by:
Pete Schmidt, Lindenmeyr Paper

Lindenmeyr Book Publishing Papers is a national merchant that dedicates all of its resources to servicing the requirements of book and documentation publishers, printers and packagers. Peter Schmidt has focused on helping Christian Publishers with their paper needs since joining Lindenmeyr in 1988.

After graduating from Western Michigan University, Pete began his career in the technical department of Allied Paper Mills. He also worked in customer service and scheduling before joining the sales team. Prior to joining Lindenmeyr, Pete covered the book publishing market for the Port Huron Paper Company and its successor, EB Eddy Paper.

Pete resides in Kalamazoo, Michigan with his wife, Julie. They have two sons. Eric is a senior at Hope College, and Alex is a freshman at the University of Michigan. Left with an empty nest, Pete and Julie's parenting skills are now tested by a very spoiled Labrador Retriever.
