State of the Economy:
What happened and when will it come to an end?

Christopher Thornberg, Principal, Beacon Economics

Last year even as the US was already in a recession not only were forecasters saying we weren't in a downturn, they were predicting that the economy would be moving strongly forward by the beginning of 2009. Now those same voices are calling for a multi-year downturn akin to a depression, the market is hitting shocking lows and the government is pulling out the stops on a variety of financial and fiscal stimulus packages. What is going on out there? How did we get into this mess? Is it really that bad? And most important--when will it come to an end?
