To advance the purpose of InterVarsity Press, this position will effectively develop and execute a marketing strategy that will promote growth and increase brand awareness of IVP Academic within the academic market.

 

You love books, and especially books written by academics across a wide spectrum of topics, perspectives, and disciplines. You are a perpetual student, always interested in learning something new, intellectually curious. You understand that the academic book marketplace has its own unique character and complexities, different from the general trade marketplace, and that the Christian academic book marketplace is even more distinct. Your idea of a great time would be to sit down with a professor or group of professors and have a deep discussion on a topic, whether you have previously had any exposure to that topic or not. You are a good listener, especially when you may not know or understand the topic, in which case you ask insightful questions to increase your understanding. You are also a good verbal communicator, whether in one-on-one conversations or larger groups, and can hold your own in conversations on topics represented by our array of academic books. You have a sense of key academic journals, events, conferences, and conversations. You see the broad tent under which IVP books reside and the range of perspectives, theologies, and opinions represented, and you believe this range is a distinctive strength. You know how to respectfully disagree with someone with a different persuasion and yet demonstrate flexibility with your own perspectives as opposed to reflecting dogmatism. You have demonstrated in your previous work experiences that you work well with a wide range of people and easily develop rapport with your colleagues. You enjoy working with teams in a collaborative environment. You are comfortable with technology and you desire to leverage it better to market books. You are detail-oriented, dependable, and efficient. You understand and appreciate the mission of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship as a whole, and you want to be a part of an organization like this.

 

Characteristic responsibilities will include:
Serving as the Brand Manager for IVP Academic by:

  •   Ensuring the quality of messaging and design for all IVP Academic marketing, whether in print or digital forms, working in collaboration with the director of marketing and director of sales.

  •   Reporting regularly on new initiatives and strategies related to the IVP Academic line.

  •   In collaboration with the IVP Academic sales manager and the director of marketing, ensuring that

    IVP Academic authors receive marketing overviews (marketing plans) for new, IVP-originated titles

    at least one month prior to their in-warehouse arrival dates.

  •   Presenting select IVP Academic new titles at Internal Sales Conferences and, when requested, at

    Noble Marketing Sales Conferences.

  •   Developing programs and initiatives to promote select IVP Academic backlist titles.

  •   Working in conjunction with the Creative and Consumer Engagement team and the social media

    manager to grow the IVP Academic audience.

  •  

  • Provide leadership to the academic marketing initiatives by:

  •   Planning, booking and approving advertisements for academic and reference books in theological and other academic journals and academic conference program guides, appropriate non-academic periodicals, and in online media.

  •   Collaborating with the director of marketing or the senior marketing manager on the placement of ads for select IVP Books line titles that should appear in academic journals and periodicals.

  •   Serving as a collaborator with the publicists (print and online) who seek publicity for IVP Academic titles, responding to their questions or making suggestions as needed on placements to seek out for individual titles.

  •   Coordinating the development and execution of academic trade sales literature both print and digital, including two catalogs annually; working collaboratively with editorial on the execution of these tools, leading meetings that determine titles and subjects of focus, and coordinating necessary follow- up.

  •   Developing and executing a strategy in conjunction with the key editorial and sales colleagues working with IVP Academic for textbook adoptions.

  •   Fostering effective and professional working relationships with academic authors and interacting with professors regularly for market insights and understanding.

  •  

    Contributing to academic conference staffing by:

  •   Attending ETS and AAR/SBL national meetings in a sales and set-up/tear-down capacity.

  •   Attending regional academic events, as needed.

  •   Keeping informed of other potential conferences to attend to benefit the sales and awareness of the

    IVP Academic brand and attending, as needed.

Participate in strategy for publishing decisions by:

  •   Responding with a marketing voice to IVP Academic book proposals during the regular publishing meetings.

  •   Contributing a marketing voice to the IVP Academic cover approval process.

  •   Maintaining an awareness of the academic and general trade marketplace and offering perspectives

    during publishing and QPEM meetings.

  •   Communicating anticipated sales within as we consider proposals and manuscripts.

  •  

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  •   Annually affirm InterVarsity’s Statement of Faith as a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ

  •   Undergraduate degree in a theological or equivalent area required; seminary or graduate level work

    preferred

  •   Understanding of the Christian college market in particular is desired

  •   Experience in academic bookstore management or book buying preferred

  •   Previous experience attending or participating in AAR/SBL, ETS or equivalent academic conferences

  •   Good written and verbal communication skills essential

  •   Good working knowledge of academic books, book retailing, or book publishing essential

  •   Interest in selling and marketing through the Internet, and a knowledge of the digital requirements of

    the web will be helpful.

  •   Familiarity and comfort with using social media

  •   Collaborative work style

  •   High comfort level with PC applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and comparable

    programs is essential, as is general technological aptitude.

  •   Flexibility to attend Urbana Student Missions Conference every three years, Dec. 26-Jan.1, and

    National Staff Conference every three years (the year after Urbana), approximately Jan. 3-8
