ECPA announces expanded submission categories for Christian Book Award® program
Strategic additions to award categories will enhance discovery and awareness of award-winning Christian books
- NonFiction expands to Biography & Memoir,
Christian Living, Faith & Culture
- Bible Reference adds Bible Study and Ministry Resources
- Young People’s Literature category created for ages 9-16
- Inspiration renamed Devotion & Gift
- Something new brewing with Fiction!
ECPA has just announced new categories and changes for the Christian Book Award® program effective immediately for upcoming submissions to the 2017 program on September 1-30, 2016. The additions expand the current 7 award categories to 11 and include the following changes:
The NonFiction category expands to three separate categories:
- Biography & Memoir
- Christian Living
- Faith & Culture
New category for Young People's literature:
- Young People’s Literature: for ages 9-16, YA fiction and nonfiction works
- Children's category will now encompass ages 0-8, fiction and nonfiction
Bible Reference expands to three separate categories:
- Bible Reference Works
- Bible Study
- Ministry Resources
The Inspiration category is renamed Devotion & Gift to encompass devotionals, poetry & readings, and gift-packaged works.
The Bibles and New Author categories will remain unchanged and continue as important categories of the award program. In addition, the Christian Book of the Year™ will continue to be chosen from the award’s finalist pool each year.
The fall submission period will not include the Fiction category in anticipation of a new and expanded industry Fiction award program that will be launched in the Spring. Details of the new program will be announced soon.

Devotion & Gift
Children (ages 0-8)
Young People’s Literature (ages 9-16)
“The mission and purpose of the Christian Book Award® program is to help readers discover the quality content our members are publishing,” explains ECPA executive director Stan Jantz. “This strategic expansion of the program is in response to a changing culture and book market in order to create new opportunities for discovery of award-winning Christian books.
“I am grateful for the expertise of the industry leaders who serve on the ECPA Recognition Committee and for the countless hours they invested in this decision.”
ECPA member publishers are encouraged to immediately assess their titles published October 2015 through October 2016 for nomination in the new Christian Book Award® categories during the September 1-30 submission period.
For more information on the specific criteria for each category, visit the ECPA website. Submission fees will remain the same and there is no limit to the number of submissions a house may choose to enter.
The 2017 Christian Book Award® finalists will be named in March 2017 and winners will be announced at the Industry Awards Night in conjunction with the May 2017 ECPA Leadership Summit in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Award finalists and winners are promoted to consumers in national Christian and general market retail and media campaigns throughout the year.
