BEHIND THIS MONTH'S BESTSELLERS: NEW IS THE NEW NORMAL

by Stan Jantz, ECPA executive director

The trend of new releases making their presence known on ECPA’s bestsellers lists continued in October, reflecting September POS data captured by NPD BookScan. The #1 and #2 books on the Top 50 Bestsellers list were released in September—Max Lucado’s newest book, Anxious for Nothing (Thomas Nelson) topped the list, with Jonathan Cahn’s The Paradigm (Frontline/Charisma Media) coming in right behind.

Four other new releases rounded out the Top 20: Gracelaced by Ruth Chou Simons (Harvest House) at #9, Unshakeable Trust by perennial bestselling author Joyce Meyer (FaithWords) at #16, new author Ben Stuart’s Single, Dating, Engaged, Married(Thomas Nelson) at #17 and Dr. Don Colbert’s Keto Zone Diet (Worthy Publishing) at #20.

Five other debut books by four different publishers—Baker (Bethany House and Baker Books), WaterBrook, Barbour, and Abingdon—placed in the Top 50.

Two stories worth noting surround two other Top 50 bestsellers. Recently released and gaining steam, The Emigrant Edge by Brian Buffini (Howard Books) is #27 on ECPA’s Top 50 list. It has appeared on the bestsellers lists of the New York Times, the Los Angeles TimesUSA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Brian immigrated to San Diego and became the classic American rags-to-riches story, becoming one of the nation’s top business experts.

And the new release Reading People by Ann Bogel (Baker Books) is part of the wave of personality and Enneagram books making their presence known in the evangelical book market. The reading guides and book lists Ann talks about in her What Should I Read Next? podcast have established her as a tastemaker among readers, authors, and publishers.

The Top 25 Fiction list followed the “new is the new normal” trend with 9 new releases. The latest from Beverly Lewis, The Proving (Bethany House) came in at #1, followed by Wanda Brunstetter’s new release, The Beloved Christmas Quilt(Barbour) at #5. Beth Wiseman’s new title, An Amish Christmas Love (Thomas Nelson), debuted at #9.

In the Top 25 Juvenile bestsellers list, Halloween may be on the mind of readers with Thomas Nelson’s Never Touch a Monster topping the list. The Jesus StoryBook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones (Zonderkidz) was #2.  In addition, three young people’s titles (ages 9-16) made the list, which is something of a rarity. They are: The Young Readers edition of Finding Gobi by Dion Leonard (Thomas Nelson), Maverick & Me by Katherine Schwarzenegger (Ideals/Worthy), and Brave Beauty by Lynn Cowell (Zonderkidz) placed at #19, #20, and #21 respectively.

In what is sure to be a boost for both the adult and young reader’s edition of Finding Gobi, which has appeared on several bestsellers lists, a major motion picture based on the story is in development.

The kids market flexed its muscles in the ECPA Top 25 Bestselling Bibles list as well.  The #1 and #3 top selling Bibles overall according to NPD BookScan were the NIV Adventure Bible and the NIrV Adventure Bible for Early Readers, both by Lawrence O. Richards (Zonderkidz).
