Justin AhrensDESIGN  Justin Ahrens

As founder and Creative Director of Rule29, Justin infuses his strategic creative firm's credo of "making creative matter®” into every project. With clients ranging from nonprofit organizations to Fortune 100 corporations, Justin strives to continuously expand the boundaries of R29's design, collaborative approach and creativity to deliver unequaled results. His passion for his profession is evidenced by his involvement in design community organizations. Having served on a variety of industry boards for several years, most recently on the Epic Advisory Board, Justin is also a member of the STA and AIGA having held AIGA board positions in Arizona and Chicago. Justin's work can be seen and has been recognized in leading industry publications and books including Communication Arts, HOW, PRINT, Graphis, Graphic Design USA, AIGA, HOW Design Books and Rockport Publishers (Including ones authored by Rule29). Additionally, Justin can be found speaking on various topics around the country, serving as an adjunct professor, writing for HOW, AIGA, rednow and Rockport and most recently as author of his own book Life Kerning™. His passion for design is only overshadowed by Justin's love for being home with his wife Sarah and their four amazing kids (who think Dad's job is listening to music, drawing pictures and playing on the computer).

 


Cindy BunchMARKETING  Cindy Bunch

Cindy Bunch is Associate Editorial Director at InterVarsity Press, where she has worked for 25 years. She is the author of several LifeGuide bible studies and the editor and compiler of the Quiet Time Bible Guide. She has provided the editorial vision to IVP's bestselling line of books on spiritual formation, including titles by James Bryan Smith, Richard J. Foster and Ruth Haley Barton.

 


Jeff CrosbyMARKETING  Jeff Crosby

For the past 16 years Jeff Crosby has served as associate publisher and director of sales and marketing at InterVarsity Press in Downers Grove, Illinois. He began his career in 1983 as the owner and manager of Logos Bookstore in Bloomington, Indiana and served as Executive Director of the Association of Logos Bookstores. Prior to joining IVP, he was vice president of sales at Ingram Book Company's Spring Arbor division in LaVergne, Tennessee. He is the editor and compiler of the book Days of Grace through the Year, a collection of devotions drawn from the writings of Lewis B. Smedes (IVP, 2007) and has written for Books & Culture, UrbanFaith.com, Publishers Weekly, Christian Retailing, Marriage Partnership and ExploreFaith.org.

 


Tom DeanMARKETING  Tom Dean

Tom Dean is a 25-year Christian publishing veteran, serving in sales, editorial and marketing roles with various companies. He has spent the last 12 years at Zondervan, first as Associate Publisher for Inspirio and more recently in Senior Marketing roles for Bibles and Books. In his current position as Senior Director of Marketing for Trade Books, he works with a host of long-term Zondervan authors as well as many new voices. Tom is passionate about creative marketing, running, strong coffee and of course, great content. He and his wife Leslie have 3 amazing kids plus a recently acquired son-in-law and live in the quaint farming community of Caledonia, MI.

 


Brian FlaglerRIGHTS & LICENSING | EDITORIAL  Brian Flagler

Brian Flagler founded Flagler Law Group in the spring of 2006 to serve the legal needs of publishers, designers, producers, and distributors of Christian media. Before founding the firm, he served as vice president of administration & general counsel of Multnomah Publishers. Previously, Brian practiced intellectual property and corporate law in the Portland, Oregon office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, a leading international media firm. Prior to moving to the west coast, Brian practiced with Troutman Sanders LLP in Atlanta, Georgia and served as adjunct instructor of intellectual property law at Clayton College & State University. He holds a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

 


Ryan FrederickMARKETING  Ryan Frederick

Ryan Frederick is the Principal and Creative Director of emg, a full service web and experiential marketing agency based in Southern California. Since 2009 he has worked alongside publishers, non-profits, startups, and multinational brands to advance their brands and goals in unconventional ways. Aside from emg, Ryan invests his time blogging about marriage and developing experimental business models.  Ryan and his wife Selena currently live in Palm Desert and are expecting their first child (a daughter) in December!

 


Tim GreenDESIGN  Tim Green

Tim is senior art director at Faceout Studio. Tim's covers have been recognized by the AIGA 50 Books / 50 Covers Show, the New York Book Show, Graphis, and and have received national recognition from the American Advertising Federation. Tim's work has been published in books by Rockport and Barcelona based maomao publications and has been a frequent judge with the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards. Tim also enjoys speaking at university design programs along the west coast. Students bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the craft that is invaluable. Tim graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2002, and he has been designing books ever since. When he is not at his desk designing, he is most likely to be found at home, with his lovely wife and 2 children. If he's not with them, it's a safe bet you'll find him at a coffee shop...probably designing something.


Stan GundryRIGHTS & LICENSING | EDITORIAL  Stanley N. Gundry

Stanley N. Gundry, Senior Vice President and Publisher of the Church, Academic, Reference, and Reflective publishing group; and Editor-in-Chief at Zondervan, is an influential figure in publishing with years of experience as an editor, author and adjunct professor.

 

 


Thom HoymanDESIGN  Thom Hoyman

Thom Hoyman is the Sr. Creative Director of Integrity Music at David C Cook. Hoyman began his career in Indianapolis working for several top advertising agencies before moving to the Christian publishing world in Colorado Springs where he has worked for the last 15 years. Thom played a key role in the global rebrand of David C Cook and led marketing design for the New York Times best selling book, Crazy Love by Francis Chan, The Action Bible product line, and the merger of Kingsway Music and Integrity Music. Throughout his career, Hoyman has been recognized for excellence in design and creative problem solving by The American Advertising Federation. Thom grew up as a military kid in Washington D.C. and now resides in Colorado Springs with his wife and 2 boys.

 


Bob HudsonEDITORIAL  Bob Hudson

Bob Hudson is a senior editor-at-large at Zondervan, where he has worked for nearly thirty years. Before that he worked in editorial offices at R. H. Donnelley in Oak Brook, Illinois, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has a masters degree in comparative literature from UNC. He has written or cowritten three books, most recently the second revision of The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style, which it currently undergoing its third major revision. He has published articles and poetry in such journals as Christianity Today, The Mennonite, The Lamp-post, Seneca Review, and many others. He currently plays fiddle in an old-time string band, called Gooder’n Grits, along with his wife, Shelley, and two other musicians.

 


Carol JohnsonEDITORIAL  Carol Johnson

Carol Johnson served as VP/Editorial at Bethany House Publishers from 1978 to 2008. Her acquisition of novelist Janette Oke was an initial step in establishing Christian fiction as a successful genre in the CBA industry. With a vision of finding novelists who skillfully entwine stories with their Christian world view, Carol was instrumental in establishing the Christy Awards for Excellence in Christian Fiction as well as the Christian Fiction Task Force, an ad hoc group of publishers joining forces to promote fiction in CBA stores.  The ACFW recently named their annual fiction award program after her.

She and husband, Gary, received ECPA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. They now consult with publishers, authors, and editors as J&J Literary Advisors.  

 


Liz JohnsonDESIGN  Liz Johnson

Liz Johnson is the Editorial and Marketing Manager for the Max Lucado brand at Thomas Nelson and has been part of the Lucado Brand Leadership Team since 2010. Prior to joining this team, she spent four years in publicity at WaterBrook Multnomah, where she worked with bestselling fiction and nonfiction authors. When not working on someone else's books, she writes her own and is the author of five novels and a New York Times best-selling novella.  Liz loves exploring the rich history and harmonies near her home in Nashville, Tennessee.

 


Mike KennedyDESIGN  Michael Kennedy

Mike Kennedy is co-founder of FastPXL, Inc. a mobile app development firm.  He also leads the marketing efforts for Kidzmatter, a non-profit children’s ministry and magazine publisher. Kennedy is a former music industry professional who transitioned into publishing while developing youth programs for national talk show host & best selling author Dave Ramsey.  As Brand Manager for The Message Bible and Director of Marketing for NavPress, Kennedy played a key role in the launch and brand positioning for The Message Bible and The Message//REMIX.  In 2006 he joined the team at David C Cook where he led Cook’s brand rebuilding, and marketing efforts for authors such as Francis Chan and key new curriculum initiatives.  Kennedy enjoys playing an active role on creative teams and is a passionate advocate for creatives and design-thinking.  He resides in Colorado Springs, Co with his wife, two children, and their black lab. 

 


Skott KlebeRIGHTS & LICENSING  Skott Klebe

Skott Klebe has worked in copyright and licensing technology for more than fifteen years, leading the development of some of the largest licensing systems in the world. Skott speaks regularly at publishing industry events on topics including copyright, technology, and disruption in the ebook marketplace.

Cindy LambertEDITORIAL  Cindy Lambert

Cindy Lambert, publishing strategist for Somersault Group and a collaborative writer, is a veteran of the publishing industry with a passion to bring life-changing Christian writing into lives around the globe.  For eighteen years Cindy was the owner of an award-winning independent Christian bookstore in Maryland, then expanded into leadership roles in distribution, editorial, consumer research, and publishing at Ingram, Simon & Schuster, and Zondervan, where she most recently served as vice president and associate publisher of trade books. Lambert, editor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Mistaken Identity (Howard Books, 2009, Van Ryn, Cerak, Tabb), has worked alongside such bestselling authors as Mark Batterson, Kyle Idleman, Kay Warren, Carol Kent, Ruth Graham, and Debbie Macomber. Dave LambertEDITORIAL  David Lambert

David Lambert is the author of ten published books, including the gold medallion award-winning Jumper Fables, coauthored with Ken Davis, and the novel The Missionary. Five of the ten have been novels. His short fiction has been published in periodicals as diverse as TQ, The Chariton Review, Sand, Virtue, Moody, Guideposts for Kids, and Story. David has an M.F.A. in fiction writing from the University of Montana. He has held a variety of positions in publishing, including managing editor of a youth magazine and founding editor of two others. He spent eighteen years as an acquiring editor at Zondervan, most of that time as Executive Editor for fiction, and most recently, three years as senior fiction editor at Howard Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. David also sits on the Editorial Board of Jerry Jenkins’s Christian Writers Guild and wrote the Guild’s fiction curriculum. He currently heads Lambert Editorial Services and is Editorial Director for Somersault, a new publishing services bureau.

Pete Larson has been with Bethany Press for over 15 years and currently serves as their President and Chief Sales Officer. Hosung MaengRIGHTS & LICENSING  Hosung Maeng

Hosung Maeng is currently president of rMaeng2 (formerly known as KCBS), the only agency in Korea specialized in Christian titles. He has placed 3,000+ Christian titles in Korea since year 2000. He currently represents most of US & UK Christian publishers and author agencies for Korean language and works with 200+ Korean publishers (both Christian and non-Christian). He is known as an expert in the area of Christian publishing industry in Korea which is one of the largest sublicensing market outside the English language speaking territory. He has a B.A. in English Literature from Soongsil Univ, Seoul, an M.Div. from Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary, Seoul, and also studied New Testament in the Ph.D. program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL, USA.

Tito MantillaRIGHTS & LICENSING  Tito Mantilla

Tito Mantilla is publisher at Editorial Portavoz, the Spanish division of Kregel, Inc., in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he has worked since 2007. Portavoz was founded in Spain in1970 by Harold Kregel;the operation movedto the US and itcurrently has over 500 titles in print with a worldwide distribution. Mantilla has a background in engineering but left that industry to fulfill a personal commitment to impact the Hispanic church with biblically based publications.

 

 


Kathy OlsonEDITORIAL  Kathryn Olson

Kathryn Olson is a senior editor with Tyndale House. She edits several key fiction titles each year as well as actively mentoring newer members of Tyndale’s fiction team. She is occasionally called on to edit a nonfiction manuscript as well, having several years’ experience as an editor of adult nonfiction and study Bibles. Recent projects include novels by Francine Rivers, Tracy Groot, and Gina Holmes and a nonfiction series by Dr. Gary Chapman. Kathryn lives in Winfield, Illinois, with her husband, Timothy (whom she met at Tyndale) and their son, Daniel. In addition to her work for Tyndale House, she enjoys a second job as Daniel’s fourth-grade homeschool teacher.

 


Tim SchraederMARKETING  Tim Schraeder

Tim Schraeder is obsessed with all things social media. Having worked with some of the world’s largest churches and para-church organizations, he served as an evangelist for social media with a knack for connecting people and spreading ideas that matter. He’s been a consultant and coach as well as a sought-after speaker and author who helped write the book on communication and social media for the church. Today, Tim is passionate to help businesses and organizations connect, engage, and build loyal followers across all forms of social media. He is a die-hard Chicagoan who can be found in any neighborhood coffeeshop that has free wifi. He is the co-founder of Some Company, a social media company that helps organizations and individuals who have something worth sharing.

 


Torrey SharpDESIGN  Torrey Sharp

Torrey Sharp is principal at Faceout Studio and producer with Faceout Films. Prior to Faceout, Torrey was a National Sales Manager for Multnomah Publishers and Vice President of The DesignWorks Group. Faceout's design work has been recognized by Communication Arts, the AIGA, Print magazine, Eye magazine, STEP magazine, Graphis, CMYK, Graphic Design: USA, ECPA, The Chicago Book Clinic, the New York Book Show, the AAUP and the American Advertising Federation. Faceout’s work has also been published in various books, most recently from Rockport, Harper Collins, Springer and Barcelona-based Mao Mao publications. Faceout Films has produced film for various general market publishers as well as for well know CBA properties such as The Five Love Languages, The Love Dare, The Message Bible and authors, Beverly Lewis, Dee Henderson, Wanda Brunstetter, Andrew Palau, Jen Hatmaker, and Thom Rainer. Torrey enjoys speaking at universities and collaborating with industry professionals on ideas and product development. A recent collaboration with the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau led to a mutually rewarding five year partnership. In his spare time, Torrey stays active with his wife and five children and consults with IBEC Ventures, a global business consulting firm.

 


DESIGN  Jill Shimabukuro

Jill Shimabukuro is an award winning book designer and, for the past 13 years, Director of Design at the University of Chicago Press. During her tenure at Chicago, she has had the privilege to build a team of exceptionally talented book designers, whose work has earned international recognition for design excellence. Jill has taught and lectured on book design at universities, conferences, and workshops, as well as served as a juror for several design competitions, including the AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers and the Chicago Book Clinic Book/Media Show. Her work has been recognized by the AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers Show, the Type Directors Club of New York, Communication Arts, the Society of Typographic Arts, the Association of American University Presses, Print Magazine Regional Design Annual, and the Chicago Book Clinic, among others, and is part of the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum/ AIGA Design Archives and Society of Typographic Arts/Chicago Design Archive. Most recently, Jill was named by NewCity one of the 50 most influential design professionals in Chicago.

Joshua Tallent, the Chief eBook Architect at Firebrand Technologies, is a well-known eBook expert and teacher, and is a vocal advocate for beautiful, functional, accessible eBook files. He and his team provide eBook design and consulting services to both publishers and authors, specializing in complex and enhanced eBook projects and grand ideas. Jeannette TaylorRIGHTS & LICENSING  Jeannette Taylor

Jeannette Taylor first began working in the Bible publishing industry in 1984. Hired as Zondervan's first market research analyst, she rose quickly through the ranks and was appointed general manager of the Bible division after four years with the company. During her tenure at Zondervan Bibles, she was instrumental in the creation, development and launch of multiple Bibles including the NIV Study Bible, The Student Bible, The Adventure Bible, The Teen Study Bible, and the Women's Devotional Bible. Named Vice-President of Marketing for the Zondervan Corporation in 1992, Jeannette directed all marketing functions including market research, market strategy, graphic design, advertising, and media relations. After the birth of her first son, she left Zondervan and started her own marketing consulting firm (JET Marketing), working with companies to develop and fine-tune products and marketing strategies. In 2010, Jeannette co-founded Somersault, a Christian publishing consulting firm, with four other partners. As Somersault's Research & Development Architect, she is responsible for product development, marketing strategies, and supervision of all research functions. In addition to her consulting businesses, Jeannette is an adjunct professor at Cornerstone University, where she teaches marketing at the undergraduate and graduate level. Jeannette lives with her husband and two sons in West Michigan.

 


Larry WeedenEDITORIAL  Larry Weeden

Larry Weeden is Director of Book Development, Curriculum, and Acquisitions for Focus on the Family, where he has served for 25 years. Previously, he had worked at Moody Press, Christian Herald Books, Thomas Nelson, and Leadership Journal. Larry also serves as Executive Director of the Academy of Christian Editors and is on the editorial board of the Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild.

 


Joel WidmerMARKETING  Joel Widmer

Joel Widmer is a digital marketing strategist who helps businesses make their marketing outcomes more predictable. He’s the founder of Fluxe Digital Marketing, a marketing shop that specializes in content marketing strategy and training for businesses and authors. He has worked with many of the top publishers helping authors create and execute digital marketing campaigns for book launches. He also enjoys longboarding and is on a search for the perfect hamburger. 


PRODUCTION  Marcus Woodburn

Marcus Woodburn is Vice President, Digital Products, of Ingram Content Group. Marcus spent 12 years working as an archaeologist and photographer in the Middle East and South America before hebegan his career in the information world by microfilming historical documents for UMI/ProQuest.  He became Product Manager for K-12 at ProQuest and, and after four years in the K-12 space moved in to a role as Director of Publisher Relations, working primarily with journal and newspaper publishers. After ten year with ProQuest he moved to Ingram Digital in 2007 where he was primarily responsible for working withacademic and STM eBook publishers moving in to the digital space. In this capacity he also worked closely with the Coutts, MyiLibrary and Lightning Source teams to maximize the reach of content in the ever-changing digital information world. In 2010 Marcus took on a new role as VP, Digital Products for Ingram, in particular focused on Ingram’s CoreSource digital asset management system and eBook distribution businesses. Marcus brings a broad knowledge of digital publishing, sales and distribution for journals, newspapers and eBooks.  His experience working with customers that employ a variety of strategies in reaching the fast-evolving digital market provides him with a broad perspective.  His understanding of the technologies used and the competitive landscape further enhance that digital world-view. Marcus is a regular speaker at industry conferences and events such as O'Reilly Tools of Change and has provided guidance to numerous publishers looking to realize a comprehensive digital strategy.
