Torrey is principal at Faceout Studio and producer with Faceout Films. Prior to Faceout, Torrey was a National Sales Manager for Multnomah Publishers and Vice President of The DesignWorks Group. Faceout's design work has been recognized by Communication Arts, the AIGA, Print magazine, Eye magazine, STEP magazine, Graphis, CMYK, Graphic Design: USA, ECPA, The Chicago Book Clinic, the New York Book Show, the AAUP and the American Advertising Federation. Faceout’s work has also been published in various books, most recently from Rockport, Harper Collins, Springer and Barcelona-based Mao Mao publications. Faceout Films has produced film for various general market publishers as well as for well know CBA properties such as The Five Love Languages, The Love Dare, The Message Bible and authors, Beverly Lewis, Dee Henderson, Wanda Brunstetter, Andrew Palau, Jen Hatmaker, and Thom Rainer. Torrey enjoys speaking at universities and collaborating with industry professionals on ideas and product development. A recent collaboration with the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau led to a mutually rewarding five year partnership. In his spare time, Torrey stays active with his wife and five children and consults with IBEC Ventures, a global business consulting firm.

SESSION 1:  Building an author's brand from the inside out

Philip Black, VP Client Engagement & Marketing, Avenue

A strong brand adds significant value to a business — creating loyalty with customers and positioning it for growth and expansion. Are there strategies that apply to building a brand for an author? In this session, Philip will share real world approaches and best practices that have helped his clients create meaningful brand presence and market success. This interactive workshop-style session will stimulate your thinking.

  • Developing your authors voice and unique perspective
  • Launching a new author brand platform

Philip Black has a 15-year track record of helping business leaders achieve their full potential in ways that yield tangible results — such as creating and establishing brands, developing employee and customer engagement programs, launching new products and attracting outside investment. At Avenue, a leading b2b marketing firm, he helps shape early-stage client strategy and map out business growth with new engagements. Previously, Philip was the founder and CEO of TripleSpoke Brand Architects, a brand strategy firm. His experience spans a diverse range of organizations including Citizens Financial Bank, The InterContinental Hotel, Gerson Lehrman Group, Midwest Industrial Metals and Frontiers USA.

Philip holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and is an active participant with the Business Marketing Association (BMA) and American Marketing Association (AMA) among other marketing and sales organizations. Philip is a lifelong Chicagoan and resides with his wife in the city.

SESSION 2:  The Art of Lying: Practical photo illustration techniques

Kirk DouPonce, Owner of DogEared Design


Kirk DouPonceEver wonder how images that couldn’t possibly be photographed look so real? In this session Kirk DouPonce of DogEared Design will walk you through the creation of both simple and complex photo illustrations. Using Photoshop, as well as 3D applications, he’ll show how creating imagery in today’s digital age is limited only by our imaginations.

It was 20 years ago that Kirk DouPonce designed his first book cover for Zondervan Publishing as a freelance designer. Since then he has designed over a thousand published covers for publishers all over the world. He was even on a book cover once, filling in for an absent model. Needless to say, he's familiar with Photoshop. Kirk lives within the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with his wife and their four children.

SESSION 3:  Role of Design in Publishing + On site studio tour

Josh Dennis, Executive VP of Creative, Crossway Books

Josh DennisJosh Dennis will explain how Crossway is structured, how work flows through the company and how design plays an integral role in everything they do and create.  Josh will identify ways their structure enables them to design integrated campaigns around their books and other products. Josh will enhance his presentation with specific case studies and video presentations. This will be followed by an onsite studio visit at Crossway (very close to Wheaton College). Josh will talk about the design of the space, how they use it as a team and share tips for cultivating an in house design department that values and yields consistent excellence.

Josh Dennis is the Executive Vice President of Creative at Crossway. Josh studied Business and Art and received his B.A. from Taylor University in 2002. Josh has worked in a variety of creative roles including Production Designer, Designer, Art Director, and Creative Director. He works with an award winning and talented team at Crossway. In his career he has been able to collaborate with a diverse group of talented creatives including, designers, illustrators, film directors, developers and more. He lives with his wife, 3 boys and dog in Wheaton, Il. He is involved in his church, loves good design, has a passion for beauty, and more than anything wants to faithfully serve the Lord.

SESSION 4:  ECPA Top Shelf Design Award Ceremony

In this session, ECPA's 2014 Top Shelf Design Award judges will reveal each of the winning entries. Judges will comment on why the top selections received the winning votes, specifically why the work stood out and also reveal the best of show winner. Judges will also discuss design related topics from a broad industry perspective. This session will be celebratory in nature as the best design work of the year is acknowledged. Nicely designed awards will be handed out in addition to a handsomely designed printed annual featuring the winning work, compliments of Color House Graphics.
