ECPA TOP SHELF AWARD: judges from 2012





Presented annually as an education program for ECPA members, the ECPA Book Cover Award was launched in 2007.  In 2012, the DESIGN element of the award program was established in partnership with Faceout Studio to assess the design merits of a book cover including:

1) appropriateness for the market

2) level of conceptual thinking

3) quality of execution

Sponsored by market leading design firm, Faceout Studio, the DESIGN awards will be managed by Principal, Torrey Sharp and judged by a panel of three industry experts featured below.

Charles Brock is principal and creative director at Faceout Studio. Charles' covers have been recognized by PRINT, Graphis, Communication Arts, the AAUP Book Jacket & Journal Show, Bookbuilders West, The Independent Book Publishers Association and the American Ad Federation.  Charles graduated from Oklahoma State University and has been designing book covers for 16 years. Charles has judged the IBPA Ben Franklin Awards, AAUP Book Jackets and Journals Show, the Beauty of Books in China and is excited to be a judge for the Taiwan Golden Butterfly Awards in Taipei in 2013.





Archie Ferguson grew up in the banal suburban sprawl of New Jersey. He received a BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts in 1985. After a brief stint at Scholastic inc. he got his start in book jacket/cover design in 1987 at Random House, Inc. at the Times Book imprint. From there he moved to the Alfred A. Knopf (Knopf) imprint in 1991, where he was a Designer until he was promoted to Art Director of Pantheon and Schocken Books in 1999. In 2007 after twenty years at Random House he left to be Art Director of the Harper imprint at Harper Collins where he remained until May of 2012. At which point Archie relocated from NYC to Portland, Oregon and is now nurturing a fledgling freelance business. Over the years his book jacket/covers have won numerous awards and honors, including being part of the permanent collection of the National Design Museum as well as inclusion in many design exhibitions, numerous books, annuals, periodicals and Blogs. Most recently Modern Type by Steven Heller and Gail Anderson published in October of 2012.





Chris Gilbert's book jacket, identity and packaging design experience spans over 18 years. In 2004 he co-founded Studio Gearbox with design colleague David Carlson. Studio Gearbox works for such clients as Algonquin Books, Harper Collins Publishers, John Wiley and Sons, Rodale, Random House Publishers, Simon and Schuster, Sterling Books, Thomas Nelson Publishers, W.W. Norton, Zondervan Publishing and many others. Chris' work has been featured in American Design Graphic Annual, Logo Lounge Master Library Series and Volume 6 Publications. He has also won numerous national and regional awards through the American Advertising Federation for book cover and identity design.






Faceout Studio is a market leading design firm that services a broad range of national and international publishing clientele. The studio focuses on brand design, brand identity systems, book packaging, photography, film production and product development. Over the years their work has been recognized by Communication Arts, the AIGA, Print magazine, Eye magazine, STEP magazine, Graphis, CMYK, Graphic Design: USA and the national American Advertising Federation. Their work has also been published in various books, most recently from Rockport, Harper Collins, Springer and Barcelona-based Mao Mao publications. They have been invited to speak at various events hosted by the AIGA, AAUP, and the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau as well as many northwest art schools.  Past judging experiences have included the Independent Book Publishers Association, the American Association of University Presses and the Beauty of Books in China, sponsored by the Shanghai Press and Publication Administration.
