Millions of people are not able to read their favorite books due to limited eyesight, medical conditions or learning disabilities.

As the population ages, more and more people will be unable to read the text of the average book.

According to the University of Washington Ophthalmology Department:

  • 100 million Americans are visually disabled without corrective lenses
  • 80 million people suffer from a potentially blinding eye disease
  • More than 11 million people have severe visual conditions not correctible by glasses
  • 1.1 million people are legally blind (have corrected vision in their better eye of 20/200 or worse)
  • 100,000 people have retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a family of progressive inherited diseases that cause deterioration of the retina and blindness.
