CBA Indonesia’s Indonesian Christian Retail Expo 2008, 12-13 Sept. in Jakarta, drew about 10,000 attendees and nearly 225 exhibitors to the first-ever event of its kind in the world’s largest Muslim country. The successful convention—also supported by ChristianTrade Association International, the Indonesian Gospel Music Association, and many indigenous ministries and companies—was themed “Gather to Grow.”

The event included a two-day bookseller training track, “Be Light in the Marketplace.” ChristianTrade training director Jack Scott and several Indonesian experts highlighted displays and merchandising, customer service, melding business and ministry, finances, and more.

Public events included music, book, and new-media presentations and inspirational times of testimony, praise, and worship on the main stage in the middle of the large exhibition floor. The open show also featured children’s events and seminars on media influence, filmmaking, and more. CBA Indonesia publicized the expo widely through Jakarta and the surrounding communities, including distributing about 5,000 posters and 100,000 flyers.

“It is really quite amazing what the Lord is doing in Indonesia,” says ChristianTrade president Jim Powell. “In the world’s most populous Muslim nation, Bibles, Christian books, and other resources are distributed through normal retail and publishing channels. The Christian Book Expo is a great testimony to the faith and vision of CBA Indonesia and its leaders. We praise the Lord with the Indonesian Christian community for the miracle of such an event.”
