A Review of the Google Book Search Copyright Settlement: What You Should Know
On November 21, ECPA hosted an informational 90-minute E-Seminar on the recent Google Book Search Copyright Settlement to inform publishers of how this landmark settlement affects them and their authors and informs the decisions they need to make in the days ahead.
Recently called “the biggest book deal in U.S. publishing history,” the October 28 Google Settlement ended three years of litigation initiated by the Authors Guild and AAP in response to Google’s Library Project. Every rightsholder will need to evaluate how this highly-negotiated settlement agreement affects them and determine whether to participate or opt out of the Google program in the 120-day timeframe.
The E-Seminar is led by Brian Flagler, attorney with the Flagler Law Group and counsel for the ECPA Publishers Legal Hotline.
He calls the settlement “a significant development in the dynamic intersection between traditional copyright principles and the exploding opportunities for book content on the Internet.”
