SESSION: Whose Book Is It Anyway?

This session will explore core issues of the editorial task, including finding the balance between necessary edits and respecting and maintaining the author’s voice. How can the editor be authoritative and professional, yet at the same time humble and with a servant’s heart, content to remain in the background?


Dawn AndersonDawn Anderson is associate editor at Kregel Publications, whose stated mission is to develop and distribute—with integrity and excellence—trusted, biblically based resources that lead individuals to know and serve Jesus Christ. To that end, she acquires and edits both fiction and nonfiction. A graduate of Cornerstone University with an English major and a psychology minor, Dawn has thoroughly enjoyed various aspects of book publishing, from typesetting to editing, in both religious and general markets, both on a freelance basis and in-house.



Lydia BrownbackLydia Brownback is the author of several books, including her latest, A Woman's Wisdom: How the Book of Proverbs Speaks to Everything (Crossway, April 2012) and a speaker at women’s conferences internationally. When time allows, Lydia blogs at The Purple Cellar. She is director of editorial, book division, at Crossway, and formerly she worked as the writer-in-residence for Reverend Alistair Begg and as the broadcast media manager for Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, where she produced The Bible Study Hour radio program with James Montgomery Boice. Lydia holds degrees from Syracuse University and Westminster Theological Seminary.

Miranda Gardner is managing editor of Discovery House Publishers. Prior to Discovery House, she was associate editor with Kregel Publications. She graduated from Cornerstone University with a degree in English literature and is a member of a ten-year-old church plant in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Elizabeth Cody Newenhuyse is editorial director at Moody Publishers, where she works closely with Gary Chapman and the 5 Love Languages brand and also helps create innovative publishing strategies. She is also an award-winning author with extensive experience in the magazine world. She and former Today’s Christian Woman editor Jane Struck are planning a relaunch of their popular blog.

SESSION: Editing with E-books in Mind
David Frees, Digital Publisher, RBC Ministries
This session will survey the ever changing e-book landscape and address how to design and edit text for the best e-book results; how to edit a new project for distribution in multiple formats for multiple platforms, including apps for mobile devices; and how to create short-form content from existing books.

David FreesDavid Frees currently serves as the Digital Publisher for RBC Ministries where he oversees all global digital publishing efforts, is developing a Content Management Repository, and is constantly looking for new revenue channels and output formats that enhance Discovery House content to meet reader's needs and expectations. His background is in editing, acquisitions, writing, graphic design, and technology, and he has worked with other Christian publishers such as Baker Book House and Zondervan. He has a deep passion to learn new ways of incorporating technological trends into current publishing paradigms.

SESSION: The Role of Editors in an Era of Self-Publishing
David Zimmerman, Editor at Likewise Books, InterVarsity Press
This session will examine the state of self-publishing and why it’s so popular, the case for conventional publishing, helping authors choose wisely, and editing outside the walls of conventional publishing.

David A. Zimmerman recently celebrated his fifteenth anniversary at InterVarsity Press. He acquires and develops books for the general trade, with an emphasis on social action, grassroots movements and youth ministry. He's a board member for the Academy of Christian Editors and blogs at

SESSION: How Editors and Marketers Can Get Along (a joint session with the Marketing Track)

This session will consider issues related to the age-old tension between editors and marketers, including the different perspectives that grow out of their different roles, how to reach agreement on covers and titles, and why marketers need increasingly long lead times for things like PR galleys. Goals, challenges, structuring for collaboration, and best practices will all be presented.

Jan Long Harris is publisher of Tyndale Momentum. With many years in the fields of marketing, editing, and publishing, Jan brings a wealth of perspective to the way the various key functions within publishing can work together for success and great relationships.
