Torrey Sharp is principal at Faceout Studio and producer with Faceout Films. Prior to Faceout, Torrey was a National Sales Manager for Multnomah Publishers and Vice President of The DesignWorks Group. Faceout's design work has been recognized by Communication Arts, the AIGA, Print magazine, Eye magazine, STEP magazine, Graphis, CMYK, Graphic Design: USA, ECPA, The Chicago Book Clinic, the New York Book Show, the AAUP and the American Advertising Federation. Faceout’s work has also been published in various books, most recently from Rockport, Harper Collins, Springer and Barcelona-based Mao Mao publications. Faceout Films has produced film for various general market publishers as well as for well know CBA properties such as The Five Love Languages, The Love Dare, The Message Bible and authors, Beverly Lewis, Dee Henderson, Wanda Brunstetter, Andrew Palau, Jen Hatmaker, and Thom Rainer. Torrey enjoys speaking at universities and collaborating with industry professionals on ideas and product development. A recent collaboration with the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau led to a mutually rewarding five year partnership. In his spare time, Torrey stays active with his wife and five children and consults with IBEC Ventures, a global business consulting firm.

SESSION 1:  Making the Work Flow (combined session with Production community)

How do design, marketing, editorial and sales departments collaborate well so as to produce top quality products and results together? This session will discuss ideas for building effective team synergy, designing an infrastructure that enables high levels of productivity and methods for enhanced communication.



The Design community will gather and discuss around these key topics:

  • Why restrictions and deadlines are a designer's best friend, according to Jack White.
  • Processing a few thoughts from Steve Jobs:
    • The only way to do great work is to love what you do.
    • The heaviness of being successful vs. the lightness of being a beginner
    • How core values should shape what we produce
  • Do we honor content creators (authors) when we design their covers?
  • How can we pursue excellence as a community of designers in the ECPA?


SESSION 2:  Design as a Corporate Initiative

  • Thom Hoyman, Senior Director of Creative, Integrity Music/ David C. Cook
  • Mike Kennedy, Co-Founder of FastPXL, Inc.

Design is not simply an aesthetic application. Design is ultimately about experience, communication and emotional connection. How is a culture of design and innovation built, fostered and then encouraged to flourish? Why does this even matter? Mike Kennedy and Thom Hoyman will unpack the re-branding transformation that took place at David C. Cook over the last several years and talk specifically about shared values, the culture, the experiments and the results that catapulted Cook into a leading innovator in Christian Publishing . Through this case study, they will share some practical advise for how innovation can make a difference and how to enhance creativity within your own corporate culture.


SESSION 3:  ECPA Top Shelf Design Award ceremony

  • Judge, Jill Shimabukuro, Director of Design, University of Chicago Press
  • Moderator, Torrey Sharp, Principal, Faceout Studio

In this session, ECPA's 2013 Top Shelf Design Award judges will reveal each of the ten winning entries. Judges will comment on why the top ten selections received the winning votes, specifically why the work stood out and also reveal the best of show winner. Judges will also discuss design related topics from a broad industry perspective. This session will be celebratory in nature as the best design work of the year is acknowledged. The ECPA will be unveiling a new look for the awards and also be handing out a handsomely designed printed annual featuring the winning work, compliments of Color House Graphics.


SESSION 4:  Exploring the Creative Process

  • Justin Ahrens, Founder and Creative Director, Rule29
  • Tim Green, Senior Art Director at Faceout Studio

In this session, Justin Ahrens will explore the art of wonder through film, story and design, examining the ideas and projects that cause you to look at things with a refreshed perspective. You’ll get suggestions on how to bring a little wonder, mystery and story into both your life and work, and learn how that one little change can shift the way you view each day.

Tim Green will present a few case study examples that show how you can hone your craft while producing in the trenches everyday. Tim will discuss his methods for staying innovative, problem solving when the pressure is intense, unblocking creativity and staying inspired.
