What Authors Want from Their Editor | Part 1 and 2

This session will express an author's perspective on the work of editors.  The address will cover changes that Ryken has perceived in editors over the years, a taxonomy of editorial types, why and how editors should be valued, and possible ways in which editors can be even better than they already are.

Bio | Leland Ryken has taught in the English Department at Wheaton College for 48 years.  He has published fifty books (including edited ones) and over a hundred essays and articles.  His experience with editors is not inconsiderable, but he loves them anyway :)

This session will explore the kinds of attitudes, skills, and habits editors look for in their authors. How can editors draw the best from the authors they are workingwith?  In particular, when starting the relationship with a new author, how do you get off on the best foot, achieve the proper professional vs. friendship balance, and build a strong two-way trust factor toward the ultimate goal—a finished manuscript that author and editor can sing about. Attendees will be welcome to respond to the panel with questions and comments of their own.

Bios | Carol Johnson served as VP/Editorial at Bethany House Publishers from 1978 to 2008. Her acquisition of novelist Janette Oke was an initial step in establishing Christian fiction as a successful genre in the CBA industry. With a vision of finding novelists who skillfully entwine stories with their Christian world view, she was instrumental in establishing the Christy Awards for Excellence in Christian Fiction as well as the Christian Fiction Task Force, an ad hoc group of publishers joining forces to promote fiction in CBA stores. The ACFW recently named their annual fiction award program the Carol Awards. She and husband, Gary, received ECPA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and have established J&J Literary Advisors, providing consulting services to the Christian publishing industry.

Marianne Hering has been editing since 1987 when she joined the staff of Focus on the Family Clubhouse and Clubhouse Jr. magazines. In 2005 she became a general editor for Focus on the Family books and curriculum department. She tends to the details of all things related to bound books: writing, editing, styling, copy proofing, and developing some resources from conception through typesetting. She lives in Colorado with her husband and twin teen sons, also known as The Cavemen.

Karen Watson is the Associate Publisher of Fiction at Tyndale House Publishers. She is heading into her 20th year in Christian publishing. In addition to her long-term work in fiction, she has also worked in book and Bible development for both children and adult non-fiction titles. Karen and her husband reside in Nashville, TN.

Dave Long serves as Executive Editor, Fiction, with Bethany House Publishers where he’s been working with talented best-selling and award-winning novelists across many genres since 2004. Prior to migrating to the editorial side of the company, he spent six years in the marketing department. He and his family live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Changing technology, plus the rise of electronic publishing and of self-publishing, are altering the role and expectations of editors. What will the craft look like in coming years?  Topics in this session will explore the mindset and mechanics of preparing text for online presentation; justifying the editorial role in the era of self-publishing; coaching authors in building their digital platforms; using technology to work collaboratively on editorial projects; the increase in editorial outsourcing; and what electronic books of the future may look like. Attendees will be welcome to respond to the panel with questions and comments of their own.

Bios | Andrew T. Le Peau is Associate Publisher for Editorial at InterVarsity Press where he has worked since 1975. He blogs about publishing at and is the author of several books. He is currently writing Mark Through Old Testament Eyes which will be published in 2017.

LB Norton has been editing for nearly forty years in (mostly) Christian publishing. Her last regular paycheck came from David C. Cook Publishing in 1987; since then she’s been working as a freelancer. She has edited fiction for every age group—from picture books to adult novels, both series and stand-alone titles, with first-time and well-established authors. She has also edited nonfiction by physicians, financial planners, theologians, marriage counselors, educators, and motivational speakers. Having recently discovered that she is part of the “gig economy,” she is feeling more culturally relevant than she has since retiring her soccer-mom minivan. LB lives with her husband in West Chicago, where they raised two daughters and several dogs.

Dan Elliott is Editorial Director at Tyndale House Publishers, where he has worked in the Editorial department for 30 years. After growing up in Guatemala, Dan graduated from Wheaton College (BA, MA). Three of Dan’s five children are in college this year.

Randall Payleitner is the Editorial Director at Moody Publishers in Chicago. He has worked in various roles at Moody from Marketing to Acquisitions. Randall studied creative writing at the University of Illinois, and he has an MA from the Moody Theological Seminary. He loves the pursuit of great books. Randall and his wife, Rachel, have a two year old son.

Larry Weeden is Director of Book Development, Curriculum, and Acquisitions for Focus on the Family, where he has served for more than 25 years. Previously, he had worked in editorial roles at Moody Press, Christian Herald Books, Thomas Nelson, and Leadership Journal. Larry has also been an active freelance writer and editor for more than 30 years. Larry and his wife, Beth, have been married for more than 40 years and have one adult son and one amazing grandson.

Bio | Nate Baker-Lutz is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago's film program. He began work at InterVarsity Press in 2007 and is currently their Digital Media Producer. He has worked on set for award-winning short films as well as feature-length films and music videos and is an avid photographer. He also spends his time mentoring high school and college students who show an interest in photography and video production.

Former roles have included CEO and co-founder at RiverandLark, a web development and video production company, Head of Business Development at Origami and Director of Marketing at Quick Left. A scientist at heart, she graduated with a degree in Molecular and Cellular Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Chris Tromp is Chief Digital officer at Grey Matter Group, a creative and strategic communications agency in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As lead of the digital practice, Chris works with a wide range of clients in diverse segments developing web sites, managing social media for brands and executing digital media campaigns. Chris was part of the launch, spent over a decade in Christian retail as manager and General manager of a multi-store Parable franchise and launched several digital initiatives for Zondervan Publishing. He has a unique perspective on business, communications and emerging digital marketing opportunities. Chris lives in Grand Rapids with his wife Janyre, daughter Bryanna and son Micah. A few of his favorite pastimes include maintaining saltwater coral aquariums, biking, and playing various musical instruments.

Michael lives in Colorado Springs, CO with his wife Christina, two boys Nate and Sam and their crazy Newfie-poo Riley.
