Job Summary:


The senior editor for the Specialty division will be responsible for approximately 25 titles a year.  Types of books will include: Devotionals, Gift Books, Journals, and Design/Lifestyle books.  Some product examples include: Grace Not Perfection (by Emily Ley), Savor (by Shauna Niequist), and 100 Days to Brave (by Annie Downs).


This position will have the opportunity to work on key projects with high profile authors and will manage the books from manuscript to completion.  Experience working with 4-color books or magazines is required.  Please consider including in your cover letter examples of key projects and authors you have personally managed that include the types of books listed above.


Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains editorial schedule for approximately 25 titles per year.

  2. Manages and maintains strong relationships with key authors.

  3. Does substantive and developmental editorial work on titles. This includes editing to maintain and enhance author’s style and voice.

  4. Works with art directors, artists, and designers on products to select art, photos, and interior design that supports and enhances the manuscript.

  5. Oversees the backline for titles by either assigning to an editor or associate editor in house or hiring and overseeing freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and typesetters.

  6. Maintains budgets for editorial expenses (writers, compilers, copyeditors, proofreaders, typesetters) for assigned books.

  7. Works with authors to secure permissions, releases, and endorsements and to obtain approval for text design, copyediting, cover design, and cover text.

  8. Prepares manuscripts for typesetting and provides HCML manuscripts to other departments.

  9. Writes or secures cover copy and catalog copy.

  10. Assists in preparing product proposals to present at editorial and sales meetings.

  11. Maintains familiarity with market trends and brings new ideas for authors and brand extensions.

  12. Creates error-free, industry-leading products on time and on budget.
