MAJOR DUTIES: The Publishing Contracts Manager collaborates with Associate Publishers and editors to analyze and solidify an overall contract strategy. The incumbent drafts agreements for properties acquired by the editorial staff and for maintaining accurate royalty records, serves as a liaison between internal and external parties during contract development and negotiation stages and analyzes potential risks that contract changes may pose to the organization. In addition, this role creates language standards and rules for existing and new contracts, oversees filing for copyright registration, collaborates with Associate Publishers to manage subsidiary rights initiatives, and serves as an in-house resource to answer questions concerning digital rights, legal, or contractual issues.

 

REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Paralegal Studies, or other closely related field and at least five (5) years of experience working with publishing contracts, royalties, and rights administration. An additional five (5) years of related experience may substitute for the required degree.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of general accounting practices and procedures

· Expert knowledge of royalty payment calculations, regulations, and practices

· Expertise to effectively interpret legal contracts, especially provisions related to royalties and rights

· Strong attention to detail

· Strong analytical skills

· Strong organizational skills

· Strong interpersonal skills

· Strong verbal communication skills

· Excellent technical writing skills

· Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new software programs and processes

· Proficiency with all Microsoft applications

· Familiarity with the Copyright Law of 1976, as amended and revised

· Knowledge of UMPH publishing systems, processes, and business rules is preferred
