Perhaps because it’s summer, the ECPA Bestsellers lists for August, reflecting POS sales compiled by NPD in July, show that readers favor familiar titles. In the Top 50 Bestsellers overall, the top 8 slots are occupied by books released prior to 2017. For the second month in a row, The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman (Moody Publishers) took the top slot, followed by books by perennial bestselling authors such as Sarah Young, Lysa TerKeurst, Dave Ramsey, William Paul Young, and Karen Kingsbury.

Two books, one nonfiction and one fiction title, released in July 2017 cracked the Top 50. Sneezing Jesus by Brian Hardin (NavPress), easily our pick for the most creative title so far this year, came in at #14 overall and #11 on the Nonfiction Top 25 list. The Letters by Suzanne Woods Fisher debuted at #25 on the Top 50 Overall list and #5 on the Top 25 Fiction list.

The Fiction Top 25 bestsellers list offers no surprises. The Shack by William Paul Young (Windblown Media) tops the list, while also occupying #s 3, 11, and 13. Besides Mr. Young and his publisher, 17 authors representing 9 publishers have titles in the Top 25 Fiction list, showing the strong commitment many ECPA publishers have to fiction.

The Juvenile Top 25 reflects the continued strong interest in children’s Bibles. Five of the Top 10 titles are Bibles, topped by The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones (Zonderkidz). An interesting title in the Juvenile Top 25 is the million-selling A Child’s First Bible by Kenneth N. Taylor, first published in 2000, coming in at #10. Because of Taylor’s identity as a publisher and the paraphraser of The Living Bible, people forget that he was a bestselling children’s book author, with more than 20 children’s books and Bibles attributed to him.

Showing the strength of the juvenile market, the #1 Bible in the Bibles Top 25 bestsellers list is the NIV Adventure Bible by Lawrence O. Richards (Zonderkidz). In fact, the prolific Dr. Richards, who passed away just last year, was a prolific writer and editor who was responsible for more than 200 works. No doubt he would be pleased that his name is attached to no fewer than three Bibles in ECPA’s Top 25 Bibles list for August 2017.
