BEHIND THE BESTSELLERS:
VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF THE PUBLISHING LIFE

by Stan Jantz, ECPA president and CEO

Variety is the word for the Top 50 bestselling books for July 2018, reflecting POS data collected in June as compiled by NPD BookScan and curated by Cindy Carter, ECPA’s intrepid bestsellers program manager.  The top two bestselling titles switched places from last month, with Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis (Thomas Nelson) at #1, a national bestseller that addresses insecurities about body and relationships; and Everybody, Always by Bob Goff (Thomas Nelson) following at #2.

There are eight new releases scattered among the Top 50. The highest debut is Believe It by Nick Foles (Tyndale Momentum) at #11. Foles was the backup quarterback who led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory in January, demonstrating that it is possible to fast-track a quality book in less than 6 months when the iron is hot.

Other new releases include Rory Feek’s Once Upon a Farm (Thomas Nelson) at #14, the follow up to Feek’s bestseller, This Life I Live (Thomas Nelson). Another farm-themed book is Cara Whitney’s debut title, Unbridled Faith (Thomas Nelson) at #28. In what must be a first, the book explores what we can learn from horses about ourselves, life, and even about God.

Another first this month is a single author having two debut books on the Top 50. Hawaiian Discovery (#29) and The Healing Quilt (#43) are both by Wanda Brunstetter (Barbour Publishing). In fact, Brunstetter has three books in the Top 25 Fiction bestsellers list, as does Francine Rivers (Tyndale) and Beth Wiseman (Zondervan). Topping all three of these prodigious fiction writers is Karen Kingsbury, with four titles in the Top 25, including To the Moon and Back (Howard Books) at #1.

Variety also characterizes the Top 25 Bible Translations with five different Bible translations from four different ECPA publishers occupying the top six slots!

Finally, ECPA’s Top 50 Spanish bestsellers list, which debuted in May, shows a wide variety of titles from several Spanish publishers and publishing divisions. Congratulations to Vida Publishers for having the #1 book on this valuable list, No Es Por Vista by Cash Luna; and to Barbour Publishing for the #1 spot in the Top 25 Spanish Bibles list with RV 1909 Santa Biblia.
