BEHIND THE MONTH'S BESTSELLERS: NEW RELEASES MAKE A STRONG SHOWING

by Stan Jantz, ECPA President and CEO

New releases dominate the ECPA Top 50 bestsellers list for March, reflecting POS sales compiled by NPD BookScan™ in the month of February 2019. In fact, four of the Top 10 books were released in February, and all are by authors with a robust media presence. Coming in at #4 from Thomas Nelson is Grateful American by Gary Sinese, the Oscar-nominated actor and long-time advocate for America’s veterans. The Duck Dynasty’s patriarch Phil Robertson comes in at #5 with his new book, The Theft of America’s Soul (Thomas Nelson).

Hollywood producer Devon Franklin, who has a string of box office hits and bestselling books, is back with The Truth About Men (Howard Books), coming in at #8. Rounding out the Top 10 is the latest from leadership guru and longtime bestselling author John Maxwell, Leadershift (HarperCollins Leadership).

Other notable new releases in the Top 50 include Brave Love by Lisa Leonard (Zondervan) debuting at #11. Lisa is the founder of the thriving online jewelry and lifestyle brand, Lisa Leonard Designs. Right behind at #12 is another memoir of a very different kind: A Serial Killer’s Daughter by Kerri Rawson (Thomas Nelson) is a story of faith, love, and overcoming.

Girl, Wash Your Face (Thomas Nelson) holds its firm grip on #1, which isn’t unexpected. But the debut of Hollis’ newest book, Girl, Stop Apologizing (HarperCollins Leadership), is a surprise entry in the Top 50 because the book didn’t release until March 5. The position of that book at #23 is reflective of the number of copies that were bought and paid for in the month of February.

New releases by two notable fiction writers also made the Top 50, but only one was a fiction book. The Forgiving Jar by Wanda Brunstetter (Barbour Publishing) is at #27, while Charles Martin uses his storyteller’s imagination to illuminate key moments from Scripture in What If It’s True? (Thomas Nelson), coming in at #39.

Brunstetter’s new release tops the Top 25 Fiction bestsellers list. In what may be a surprise to no one, this prolific Barbour Publishing author has three other books in the Top 25 this month. Astonishingly, Amy Clipston has five books in the Top 25, including her January release, Amish Sweethearts (Zondervan) at #3. Francine Rivers (Tyndale and Multnomah) and Jonathan Cahn (Frontline/Charisma House) each have three books in the Top 25.

The Top 25 Juvenile bestsellers list reveals a new #1 book: When I Pray for You by Matthew Paul Turner (WaterBrook), the newest in his very successful series for kids. Another notable new release in this category is Lies Girls Believe by Dannah Gresh (Moody Publishers) at #7. Dannah is the co-author with Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth of two other books in this series: Lies Women Believe and Lies Young Women Believe, both published by Moody.

The bestselling book in the Top 50 Spanish is 5 Lenguajes De Amor by Gary Chapman (Unilit). Grupo Nelson has the three top selling Spanish Bibles in the Top 25 Spanish Bibles list.
