BEHIND THE BESTSELLERS: FIVE NEW RELEASES BREAK INTO THE TOP 50

by Stan Jantz, ECPA President and CEO

Strong backlist sales and the continued success of several books released just a month ago dominate ECPA’s suite of Christian bestseller lists for April 2019, reflecting POS sales as compiled by NPD BookScan in March. Only five new releases are on the Top 50 bestsellers list. Rosenberg’s newest novel, The Persian Gamble (Tyndale House) is the highest-ranking debut book on the list, coming in at #6. Rosenberg has found success turning world events into compelling international thrillers that reflect his biblically-informed perspective.

Three other new releases are from familiar bestselling authors. David Jeremiah’s The Book of Signs (Thomas Nelson) debuts at #12, followed by Don’t Give Up by Kyle Idleman (Baker Books) at #33, and Ephesians by Joyce Meyer (FaithWords) at #43. The fifth new release, coming in at #47, is Decoding the Antichrist and the End Times by Mark Blitz (Charisma House). Does the appearance of prophetic themes in three of the five new releases “predict” a trend in Christian publishing? Only time will tell.

Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis (Thomas Nelson) continues to be the #1 title in the Top 50. Her follow up book, Girl, Stop Apologizing, sits at #2 on Publishers Weekly’s Hardcover Frontlist Nonfiction list, but it is not included in PW’s Religion Nonfiction list. Nor does the book appear on ECPA’s Top 50. This is the result of the title being published under HarperCollins Leadership rather than HarperCollins Christian Publishers.

Five books released in February populate the Top 25 Nonfiction list. Grateful American by Gary Sinese (Thomas Nelson) continues a strong showing at #2, as does The Theft of America’s Soul by Phil Robertson (Thomas Nelson) at #8. Keep Showing Up by Proverbs 31 speaker Karen Ehman cracked the Top 25 for the first time, coming in at #10. Devon Franklin’s The Truth About Men (Howard) is at #13, and The Way of the Warrior by Erwin Raphael McManus (WaterBrook) is at #18.

The Persian Gamble tops the Top 25 Fiction list, followed by The Forgiving Jar by Wanda Brunstetter (Barbour Publishing). A new release by Brunstetter, The Discovery Saga, comes in at #12. Beth Wiseman (Zondervan) has two releases in the Top 25, An Amish Home and Hearts in Harmony at #5 and #22. Overall, Wanda Brunstetter, Jonathan Cahn, and Francine Rivers have three titles each in the Top 25.

The Top 25 Juvenile list features eight Easter titles, including God Gave Us Easter by Lisa Tawn Bergren (WaterBrook) at #1. Patricia Pingry (WorthyKids/Ideals) has two Easter books in the Top 25.

ECPA’s Top 50 Spanish list continues to showcase the strength of four authors: Gary Chapman (Unilit), Sarah Young (Grupo Nelson), Joyce Meyer (FaithWords) and Stormie Omartian (Unilit). Chapman’s 5 Lenguajes de Amor Los Revisado sits atop the Spanish books list. The other three authors each have four titles in the Top 50.
