Top Shelf recruits top designers



The Top Shelf Book Cover Awards celebrate the year's best book designs in Christian publishing. Covers are judged by top designers in the industry for their merits in appropriateness for the market, level of conceptual thinking, and quality of execution. Winners are announced at PUBu, held October 13-14 in Chicago.

We are pleased to introduce an impressive cast of experts who are renown creatives in the art of book design, who have graciously offered their time and expertise to the Top Shelf program this year.




Barbara de Wilde is the Creative Director of The New York Times.  Before pursuing a Master’s degree in Interaction Design at SVA, Barbara had worked as a graphic designer and design/art director in publishing. Her jacket design work for Knopf, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, FSG and many other publishers has been lauded by the design community nationally and internationally. Post-graduation, she sought to work in digital design at The New York Times. In the nearly three years since, Barbara has launched numerous digital projects, including the redesigned, The Times corporate web presence, the creation of the NYT Opinion app, and future design thinking around the news report for mobile readers. More recently, she has been leading the design of NYT Cooking as part of The Times Beta products group.

Anne Twomey has been at Grand Central Publishing and Warner Books as v.p., creative director since 2004. Previously she art directed imprints at Simon and Schuster, Warner Books and St. Martin’s Press. She’s designed covers in all formats; hardcover, literary trade paperback and mass market and now leads a very talented team of award-winning designers and art directors across the GCP imprints. She has won numerous awards from the New York Book Show, The Society of Illustrators, The Art Directors Club, Print, Creativity, AIGA’s 50 books / 50 covers and Communications Art’s Design Annual and Photo District News. Anne is a former board member of the Type Directors Club and chaired the annual competition, Typography 29.

Bruce Gore is working on his eighth year as the art director at Simon & Schuster’s Howard Books imprint in Nashville, TN. He enjoys being involved with the amazing variety of books published by Howard, as well as the high caliber of professionals he interacts with on a day-to-day basis. Prior to his tenure at Howard, he ran his own book design business for more than 20 years, working with a wide range of corporate and publishing clients across the country. He makes his home in Nashville with his wife, daughter, grandson, and a small pack of unruly dogs.
