BEHIND THIS MONTH'S BESTSELLERS: MILLENNIAL VOICES ON THE RISE

by Stan Jantz, ECPA executive director

“It’s official,” declared a media story last week. “Millennials are defined as those born between 1981 and 1996.” Numbering more than 70 million, Millennials will soon overtake Boomers as America’s largest generation. The strength of the Millennial generation is evident in the ECPA bestsellers lists for March 2018, reflecting POS sales compiled by NPD BookScan in February.

Five of the eight new releases in the Top 50 overall bestsellers list are by Millennial authors, with one more new release coming from a member of Generation Z, also known as iGen. That would be Sadie Robertson, who at the age of 20 has already written her second book, Live Fearless (Thomas Nelson), debuting at #3. A member of the Duck Dynasty family, Sadie has leveraged her fame to become “an advocate for her generation.” Anyone following the aftermath of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida is aware that Generation Z is making its voice heard.

Besides being advocates for change, these voices are using media to get their message out. Like Robertson, the Millennial authors of the other five new releases in March have a strong media presence. The #6 book in the Top 50 is Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis (Thomas Nelson), the founder of Chic Media. Jamie Ivey produces a popular podcast called Happy Hour. Her book, If Only You Knew (B&H Publishing Group) released on January 30 and sits at #11. The new paperback version of Shaken (WaterBrook), Tim Tebow’s bestseller and Christian Book Award® Book of the Year winner in 2017, is at #24.

Coming in at #30 is Wholeness (Zondervan) by Toure Roberts, the son-in-law of T.D. Jakes, a pastor, and founder of Modern Faith Media in Los Angeles. Bart Millard, a founding member and lead singer of MercyMe, is the author of I Can Only Imagine (Thomas Nelson), which debuted at #33.

Fiction titles continue to make a strong showing on the bestsellers lists. Francine Rivers’ newest title, The Masterpiece (Tyndale) is at #5 on the Top 50 list and tops the Top 25 Fiction bestsellers list. Wanda Brunstetter’s new book, The Celebration (Barbour) is at #22 in the Top 50 and is the #2 selling fiction book. Brunstetter has three books in the Top 25, followed by Jonathan Cahn (Frontline/Charisma Media), Amy Clipston (Zondervan), Karen Kingsbury (Howard), Beverly Lewis (Bethany House), Francine Rivers (Tyndale), and William Paul Young (Windblown Media), each with two titles in the Top 25.

In the Top 25 Juvenile bestsellers list, Touch and Feel: Never Touch a Dinosaur (Thomas Nelson) sits at #1, just ahead of the dominant title in this category, The Jesus Storybook Bible (Zonderkidz). Matthew Paul Turner is one of those authors who has written bestselling books in multiple categories. His new book for kids, When God Made Light(WaterBrook), is at #10.

Finally, Bible translations continue their consistent pattern in the Top 25 Bible bestsellers list. The NLT (Tyndale) and NIV (Zondervan) translations each have 7 titles in the Top 25.
