May 3, 2011, Colorado Springs, CO – Last night the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) honored David Koechel with the 2011 Jordon Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening night awards ceremony of the industry’s Executive Leadership Summit, currently in session in Colorado Springs.

Koechel’s five-decade career in design has been credited by many industry veterans to have "changed the look of Christian publishing,” making it more competitive with general publishing, and opening new marketing channels for Christian books. The phrase, "that’s a Koechel cover” became the design standard for Christian publishers and other designers.

This is the first time ECPA has recognized a graphic design professional for the industry’s Lifetime Achievement Award. ECPA President/CEO Mark Kuyper states, "We are proud to honor David’s exceptional contributions to the industry, while affirming the importance of good design and the value of a publishing team in successfully bringing a book to market. David has the genuine heart of a servant. His expertise, tireless enthusiasm, wise counsel, and longtime friendships with publishers, art directors, and many bestselling authors have made a world of difference for the cause of Christ.”

The industry took note of David’s talent in the mid-60’s when Gary Johnson at Bethany House Publishers commissioned him to do his first book cover, and numerous publishers soon followed. In 1967, Pat Zondervan brought David their entire backlist to re-cover, which truly launched David’s career. In 1974, David teamed up with John Peterson, and Koechel Peterson & Associates was incorporated in 1978. The business continued to expand to every major Christian publishing house and a host ministries—producing thousands of book covers, ads, corporate and Bible logos, including the original NIV logo.

Besides always being on the cutting edge of technology as well as an industry expert on papers, inks, fabrics, foils, and publishing trends, David developed lifetime friendships with many of the industry’s leaders, such as Bob Hawkins Sr., Bill Bright, Kay Arthur, the Zondervans, Ruth Bell Graham, Gary and Carol Johnson, Kathryn Kuhlman, David Moberg, Laura Minchew, Byron Williamson, Jack Countryman, Rolf Zettersten, and so many more. When publishers needed advice and a creative spark to get a project underway, David was the one they called, and still do.
