What We Now Know: Learning from the most comprehensive data our industry has ever had from POS, publisher, digital and consumer
For the first time in our industry, we will be presented with the most comprehensive, multi-channel data provided by Nielsen BookScan and representing 85% retail sales, including POS, publisher, digital, and consumer. This will be an information-packed session not to be missed; giving the first-ever broad snapshot of the Christian publishing industry through Nielsen’s data -- which is now the basis for the new ECPA Christian bestseller list!

Charlie Friscia is the Director of Client Solutions at Nielsen Book US -  a subsidiary of The Nielsen Company. Nielsen BookScan provides essential information needed to keep ahead in an increasingly competitive retail book market. BookScan’s US Retail Sales Panel covers approximately 85% of print trade book sales, with over 500,000 different ISBNs tracked in a typical week.  This transactional data is collected via the point-of-sale systems of major book retailers, mass merchandisers and independent book stores. A twenty-three year veteran of the publishing industry, Charlie joined Nielsen in September of 2013. Prior to joining Nielsen, Charlie successfully led several sales organizations; most recently as Global Sales Director for ProQuest/Bowker. In that role, he was responsible for the development and positioning of the PubTrack  Business Intelligence tools, which provide key analytics into Trade, Academic, Professional, and Christian markets, measuring both point-of-sale and publisher-provided sell-in data, which are now part of the Nielsen product portfolio.

Jon Merritt

On Faith and Culture
Alexis de Tocquevllle once said, The Americas combine the notions of religion and liberty so intimately in their minds that it is difficult to conceive of one without the other." Indeed, America is still overwhelmingly religious, even with all the talk of secularism and pluralism that has become commonplace today. In order for Christians to survive and even thrive in modern publishing, they must learn how to effectively weave together their faith with the broader culture.  Jonathan Merritt, senior columnist for Religion News Service and a leading faith and culture writer, shares his perspective on how to speak effectively to and from culture without compromising the counter cultural gospel of the New Testament.

Jonathan Merritt ( is a faith and culture writer who has published more than 1,000 articles in outlets such as The Atlantic, USA Today, Washington Post, National Journal, and He is a senior columnist for Religion News Service, America’s largest provider of news and commentary focused on religion and spirituality. His previous books include A Faith of Our Own: Following Jesus Beyond the Culture Wars and Green Like God. Merritt was recently named one of the "30 young voices reshaping Christian leadership" by Outreach magazine.

As a result, publishers, more than ever before, need to be attentive to the needs of their authors, lest they decide they're better off without a publisher. Digital Book World and Writer's Digest have surveyed 9,000 authors of all kinds to discover what they want and how publishers can do a better job giving it to them.

BRBOne Heart, Two Eyes
In the midst of the maelstrom of strategic planning, budgeting, acquiring, editing, titling, designing, marketing, selling, shipping, billing and collecting, it is easy to lose sight of what we are about as evangelical Christian publishers. Whether for or non-profit, in one sense, it IS about the numbers. But, it’s more than thousands and millions. It is also about being the very best we can be, in every way every day. Corrie ten Boom used to challenge us at Revell, "Christians should be and do the best. God wants nothing short of our very best.” Through shared stories, this session will reflect on our past, review our present, and consider our future with one common thread: whatever we do, with whomever we serve, we are committed to spreading the Good News that will inspire and transform lives, one heart and two eyes at a time.

Bruce R Barbour, known industry wide as "BRB", is the Founder and President of Literary Management Group and has been active in book publishing for over thirty years. He has held executive positions at several publishing houses including Fleming H Revell Company (family owned-business sold in 1979), Barbour and Company (co-founded and Exec VP 1983-1986), Thomas Nelson (VP, Publisher, 1986-1993), and Random House (VP, Publisher 1994-1996). In 1997, BRB founded Literary Management Group, LLC, a full service literary agency and publishing consulting firm that has represented best-selling authors and properties including Zig Ziglar and The Beginner's Bible, consulted with publishing houses including Thomas Nelson, Zondervan, Gospel Light, Pneuma Life, Legacy, and New Hope and packaged books for speakers, associations and corporations. BRB is the fourth generation of a publishing family that has served authors for nearly 140 years. In 1870, his great-grand uncles, Fleming H. Revell and Dwight L. Moody, started publishing Christian books.

Mark KuyperLooking Back, Moving Forward

ECPA President, Mark Kuyper ,will take a brief look back at our history and the leaders who shaped our past. However, as the saying goes, "There will never be less change than there is today" and we need to stay focused on the future. The great change we have seen in the last decade--and even the last five years--is nothing compared to what is ahead of us. We are moving forward into a world that is both uncertain and exciting! But what will it mean to 'publish'? Who will our partners be? How will we make our message known in the months and years ahead? Mark will present some of the current thinking in our industry about what lies ahead.

Mark Kuyper is the President and CEO of ECPA. He has more than 30 years of experience in the Christian resources industry. He serves on the boards of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and Magazine Training International (MTI). Previously he served as the VP of Business Development and Marketing for CBA (the trade association for Christian retailers). He also worked for NavPress for over 10 years completing his service as Sales Director. During this time he also served on the Leadership and Publishing teams for the organization. He began his career as a manager for Family Christian Stores. Mark has been married to Vicki, who is an author of more than 60 books, for 33 years and has two adult married children.
