Industry Research

At ECPA, information and research are key components to our strategic plan to serve our industry and to provide our members with the knowledge they need to understand industry and consumer trends, and determine key operational benchmarks for their publishing business. Research is generated every couple of years, as directed by the ECPA Research Committee, on the following:

BENCHMARK REPORTS

ECPA benchmark reports are developed, administered, and compiled by third party vendors who survey our members.  Participating companies are eligible to purchase the final report.

Financial & Sales Operating Performance Report

The most comprehensive and in-depth compilation of current performance statistics for evangelical Christian publishing industry to date, ECPA's Financial & Sales Performance Report presents detailed sales and operating data including sales by product type and by market channels. The information is designed and presented in order to provide easy-to-understand guidelines for identifying sales statistics and business performance improvement opportunities. To participate in the next industry study, contact ECPA.

Salary and Benefits Report

This report provides ECPA member publishers with invaluable information related to compensation levels for many departments and positions within a publishing house and includes geographic breakdowns. Similar to the Financial & Sales Operating Performance Report, the report breaks down comparative salary and benefit ratios and statistics in several different ways: by participants overall, by company sales volume size, and by corporate structure (non-profits and for-profits), including a special grouping of high profit firms. This is an indispensable report for any publishers Human Resources Department. To participate in the next industry study, contact ECPA.

CONSUMER SURVEYS

The ECPA Research Committee commissions consumer surveys based on the market needs of ECPA members.

ECPA Christian Publishers Audience Survey 2023

In response to member feedback on what research would be most value to them, the ECPA Research Committee commissioned the services of JET Marketing to find out the reading and buying preferences of book and Bible buyers among ECPA publishers’ respective audiences. This survey was conducted in June and July of 2023, so results are the latest available and includes: demographics and buying behavior; media engagement; resource engagement; and relationship with church among customers of ECPA publishers.  More Information and Order Form

Other consumer studies were conducted in 2017 and 2019.
